Meng Jiang Nü

孟姜女 (Meng Jiang Nü) is a devised dramatic sequence inspired by a Qin Dynasty Chinese Folk Tale, set in the convention of Modern Chinese Musical Theatre. The sequence revolves around a woman, 孟姜女 (Meng Jiang Nü), who journeys to the Great Wall alone in search of her husband, who unbeknownst to her, is dead. The performance reflects the themes of grief and romance. Through the use of song and performance combat, TaoLu (套路), the aim of the sequence is to empower women and encourage them to find strength and determination within themselves. The principles of Antonello Casarella and Roberto Ghetti for movement, Thomas de Mallet Burgess and Nicholas Skilbeck for text, song, and characterisation, are adopted to achieve this aim.
